As Palestinian people mourn the death of
Yasser Arafat, the General Union of Palestine
Students is not only mourning a great leader
but also a founding father of our
organization.
The
Palestinian situation was always unique among
all Arab communities , because of the
occupation , education became the shield that
Palestinians held to protect them selves in an
just world, which led to Palestinians having
the highest level of education in the Arab
world, Palestinian students spread all over
the world.
It was Yasser Arafat in the early fifties who,
as a student in Cairo, started forming
Palestinian student's leagues in various
universities in Egypt. This was the first step
towards establishing the general union of
Palestine students which then developed to
become one of the biggest student
organizations in the world raising the
Palestinian flag and spreading the facts about
Palestine and its people.
GUPS in the UK was established in 1968 and
rapidly grew to represent hundreds of
Palestinian students from Aberdeen to
Southampton. We see our selves as an
organization for students in the first place,
serving students and doing its best to help
them achieving their goals of high standards
of education. On the other hand we are
Palestinian which means we have a duty to
raise awareness about Palestine and play our
role in the just struggle of our people.
GUPS is well known in the UK for we always
built good relations with other student bodies
and participated in various student activities
such as our the NUS where we hold meetings and
participate with a big delegation every year.
GUPS , as well as all Palestinians, will
badly mess the leader and father of our nation
but we believe that the struggle will
continue, the legacy of yasser Arafat will
live on and we promise you, ABU AMMAR, that
your dream of the Palestinian flag raised over
Jerusalem , the capital of the independent
Palestinian state, will become true for we
shall struggle , as we have done for decades,
until we achieve freedom and independence,
rest assured , Mr. president that your sons
will never give up and it shall always be
REVOLUTION TILL VICTORY.
